Contributing to the energy transition through the decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial sectors where emissions are most difficult to reduce and considering the role of CCUS (carbon capture, use, and storage) as one of the key levers needed to achieve the very challenging targets set by the EU.

These are the themes that the OMC-Med Energy Conference Exhibition will launch in the first event of the roadmap towards OMC2023, which will be held on June 16, 2022, from 9:30 a.m. in the conference room of the Hotel Mattei in Ravenna.

The morning session, titled "Decarbonizing the Hard to Abate. The Ravenna Anchor Project," will focus on decarbonization with the presentation of a study on CO2 abatement interventions for the Ravenna and Ferrara Industrial District, where Cabot, Herambiente, Marcegaglia, Polynt, Versalis (Eni), and Yara are working on a project to capture, transport, use, and store CO2. This is the first Italian experience applied to a globally important manufacturing district.

Existing decarbonization technologies make Ravenna a perfect candidate as the first Italian hub for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

CCS has become central to the energy transition strategy of many European countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Furthermore, the implementation of CCS projects represents a driver of economic and employment development and growth, as well as an accelerator of innovation and the circular economy, capable of making a concrete contribution to the decarbonization of entire manufacturing districts at the local level.

In the afternoon, the debate will delve into more technical detail on the topic "The role of CCUS in the energy transition; Case histories." University professors, industry experts, and managers will discuss current experiences in other countries.

The closing remarks will be delivered by Monica Spada, president of the OMC-Med Energy Conference 2023. "A change of pace is essential," Spada commented. "It's time to turn commitments into action. These include smart and targeted policies, adequate investments, and urgently implemented innovative technologies to reduce the negative effects of climate change and develop new value chains.

With a view to a low-carbon transformation, alliances are necessary; partnering with major industries is a fundamental step to finding the most appropriate and effective solutions. OMC 2023 will continue to further explore the debate on the energy transition and sustainable development.
