About Plasticizers for PVC

The plasticizers are organic substances with various characteristics, whose main function is to intercalate the rigid polymer structures of material such as PVC for an easy movement and flexibility, making them more precisely "plastics." The presence of plasticizers in the PVC structure will influence different specific physical-mechanical properties, in particular the elastic modulus, the elongation at break, hardness, flexibility at low temperatures.

Where to use PVC plasticizers

Thanks to their unique properties, plasticizers have become an integral part of many everyday objects. You can find these small molecules in the majority of electric cables, pipes, conveyor belts, car parts such as dashboards and coatings, floorings and membranes for the construction industry and so on. Plasticizers for PVC are also used in many articles of clothing, in particular in rubber footwear, as well as in articles for the interior design or in tubs and containers for the food. Because of the wide use of plasticizers in the objects that accompany us in our daily lives, their use in industry is strictly regulated by national laws and European regulations.

Models and types of PVC plasticizers

Nowadays there are hundreds of different types of plasticizers, but not all are produced and used at a commercial level. Research in the field of synthesis of these organic compounds is constantly evolving, given the importance of their use in many construction and world trade fields. Some examples of plasticizers for PVC are represented by the following categories:
  • Phthalates: they are characterized by a particular ease of manipulation and gelation and a high efficiency and volatility; they are among the most used molecules in the field of plasticizers. Phthalates are used, in particular, in the production of electrical cables (also resistant to medium-high temperatures) for machines, electrical appliances, for the construction industry, floorings or metal surfaces.
  • Polymeric plasticizers: their main characteristic is the high migration resistance (both in contact with oils, fats and hydrocarbons, and with thermoplastic materials), a good resistance to high temperatures and a low volatility. They are used in the production of components for migration-resistant cables, tubes or membranes that come in touch with hydrocarbons, food oils and bitumen
  • Plasticizers trimellitates: they are characterized by an excellent flexibility at low temperatures and high resistance to higher temperatures; they are molecules primarily used in the production of electrical circuit components, wiring cables, car interiors and machinery components used in the medical and scientific field.
