Neophentic gelcoat

What are neopentical gelcoats?

The term gelcoat is used to describe an outer finishing layer, generally between 0.5 and 1 mm thick, used to cover products made of composite materials based on vinylester or polyester. The gelcoat's appearance is in some ways similar to that of the varnish, but it is characterized by the fact that it is applied to the mould before forming the product itself. Compared to varnishes, it has a higher density and is made up of resin, pigments for colouring and/or inert fillers to achieve consistency. More specifically, the main characteristic of neopentilic gelcoat is the use of iso and neopentilic orthophentic resins, where the presence of neopentil glycol improves its chemical and weather resistance characteristics. The neopenticlic gelcoats are mainly thixotropic: thixotropy is the ability to increase its fluidity if subjected to mechanical action and then return to the initial form when stress ceases, this makes it easy to apply on the mold. As for the application, neopenticlic gelcoats can be applied either by brush or by spraying directly on the mould of individual pieces; Typologies, properties and fields of use of neophenolic gelcoat The fundamental role of gelcoat is to provide protection for the product on which it is applied: by affixing a smooth and compact layer of this material to the object, it guarantees excellent protection from external agents such as atmospheric agents and ultraviolet rays. The water resistance and saponification and osmosis processes are important features of this material, in addition to its resistance to yellowing and masking of manufacturing defects. Polyester neopentilyclic gelcoats are also divided into: orthophthalic gelcoats, generally used for industrial applications such as production machinery, and isophthalic gelcoats, used in the nautical sector for the construction of boats. Supplied both for brush application and spray application, these coating systems are available on the market in both transparent and neutral or opaque colours, with the possibility of adding dye powders and colouring pastes to obtain certain colour samples.
